What comes to my mind when I think of LGBT is my close friend. My friend, who I’d say, came out of the closet, helped me view this unfamiliar topic from a more diverse perspective. I was very ignorant of LGBT and I did not think that there would be anyone in this LGBT community around me. But after my friend’s coming-out, I began to get to know this topic in earnest, and eventually got a chance to participate in this unfiltered project where I could speak out about various social issues.
For a long time I pondered how to carry out the issues about LGBT with my own style.
There were various ways such as infographics, videos, templates and surveys, but I decided to choose ‘cartoon’ because storytelling seemed to be the most important.
The cartoon, which begins with big and small incidents that my friend (who accepted her identity as LGBT) underwent, later on deals with endemic social issues in korea. I tried my best to organize the story so that readers could have a better understanding about the message contained in the cartoon.
Lastly, the project’s intention was to inform more people with the issue of LGBT, especially in Korea. Too many minorities have suffered and are suffering. Although social awareness has improved compared to the past decades ago, I believe Korea’s conservative mindset and subtle discrimmination is still a huge problem that we definitely need to deal with.
